Car and Driver: controversial BMW “design czar” Chris Bangle nailed “the sweet spot between bold and beautiful: with the new 5 Series. “Crisp lines” tie front to back with “no jarring interruptions.” Yet the extra 1.8 inches in witdth maintain the car’s “trademark stance.” That extra room comes in handy in the back seat, providing extra “leg-crossing space”(Sharon Stone, anyone?) for the Bimmer’s executive market.

Road and Track: Believe it or not, the Series handles better than ever. A part-aluminum frame shaves 165 lbs off the curb weight and distributes the load almost equally between front and rear. New Active Steering technology provides “tremendous grip and stability” on the hardest corners. The 1.5 liter V6 to 4.4 liter V8 options also promise decent to impressive power.

Sunday Tribune (Dublin): Has BMW improved its superlative 5 Series? “Well, yes, it has.” Drivers will enjoy a new heads-up display, HUD (this is cool stuff) that projects speed and driving directions on the windshield, “very much like a system employed by fighter pilots.” (Duh, we know where you got the idea.) The iDrive system controls everything from the radio to the heating with a console-mounted “gizmo.” The Mercedes E Class had better keep an eye on its rearview mirror.
