where to find the engine number?

Hi all.
Can anyone tell me where I can see the number on my engine?I am a proud ownen of a '95 E36 318 BMW.I looked everywhere but i cant find it.I bought the car secondhand and I want to check if the engine has the same number as in the papers.

Do you mean the VIN(vehicle identification number) or do you mean the engine type number?

I think he means to verify whether the engine matches the VIN of the car, i know mine doesnt but i dont know where to find it unfortunately.
