whirring noise

Ok, when my car (1998 318i), accelerates it makes this high whirring noise. Think of a gay cat making noises. I've been told its the power steering and the alternator. Any thoughts?

I was thinking the same thing... anything that runs off of a belt. Alternator or P/S pump.

I recently had my alternator replaced prior to replacing it sounded like my car had a turbo.

If you want to rule out the alternator try this.

Start your car, take a screw driver place the metal end on the alternator and place your ear on the handle of the screwdriver. If you can hear the bearings grinding through the screw driver it's the alternator.

or you could remove the pulley belt completely. Start the car and see if the noise is still evident.
