Whistling Clutch

I just installed a new clutch about 3k miles ago. It is now making a slight decending whistling noise while engaging first gear (kind like an incoming mortar round but not as lound and no kaBOOM at the end). Please tell me it's nothing bad. It seems to be functioning OK. I haven't really been tearing around town too much either.

By the way, does the clutch automatically tighten itself as it wears down like brakes do automatically via cylinder and fluid?

I bet it only really makes that noise when you are shifting into first when moving, right?

It's your first gear synchronizer in the transmission, not the clutch. It's normal for the synchronizers to make some noise, as long as the gears are still engaging without grinding. The synchronizers in my 270,000 mile 1987 BMW are pretty quiet, but if I have the radio off I can hear them if I listen for them. The syncros in my dad's pickup truck are really loud, and they are very slow.

Yes, the hydraulic clutches in BMWs self adjust exactly like brakes do - it's basically an identical system.

Thanks...whew...i guess that's good news. It's not really loud but I'm so hyper-tuned to noises in my car it probably sounds loud to me. I also have trouble shifting into 3rd gear, especially when cold so I guess I basically have syncro problems. Not enough to speng 6k on a new tran though. I'll wear this one out first.
