When I start my car I get a very large puff of white smoke. when I drive and take off I see the very large puff again.

anyone know what that can be?

I also hear a constant whine in the engine compartment that sounds like the engine fan or a pulley needs some lubrication.

thanks

Intermittent smoke at idle and startup - take a whiff, does it smell like oil? My guess it does. Probably bad valve guides or possibly rings.

Probably needs a top end job. Pull the plugs and check which ones look bad, then get a leakdown and compression test done.

I'd wonder what caused it. How many miles on the car, and have you done anything weird to it recently?

Run low on oil?

Overheat?

Aftermarket parts added?

Being a 1997, there is no factory warranty left -unless you bought an extended warranty when you purchased the car? Hopefully, you did.

It could be the oil separator, based on the white smoke and whine in engine.
Do you get sputtering during acceleration as well?

Top end rebuild by someone who knows what they are doing shouldn't cost a TON of money. You'll get better prices and a much better end result with a independent mechanic.

Here's the verdict from the "BMW Dealer":

The oil seperator is done. $946 parts and labor

oil got on the o2 sensors - $680 parts and labor.

Fouled the Plugs - $345 parts and labor.

Oil Change - $85 parts and labor.

Oil killed the Converters, they're rattling? $3000

Opinions, suggestions to make this price as low as possible?

thanks

Kirby was right on the money! See his other post for repair advice..

Correction It was Kenny who made the proper diagnoses not Kirby as I have mistakenly printed....
