The transmission control module or gear box has failed. If the falure message appears while the vechicle is moving, the 4th gear will be selected. The units provides enchanced performance by selecting and mainting 3rd gear when the vehicle is stopped, the engine switched off and then on again. Should this happen, avoid extreme engine loads and have your vehicle check.

I've had this problem before. Two questions for you. Does you battery light on the dash come on too? if it does, it's the Alternator. (2) is your battery still good?
BMW, when the car can't get electricity in the engine, it happens. The car drags. My was that i needed a new alternator. Make sure your not running on your batter now.
or maybe could be that your transmission is about to die.
Hope this helps.

Actually the light went off and the car started shifting normally. The batery light doesnt come on thoguh. The light came on again when i started the car but when i switched it off and on again it didnt come on. I dont know think its the tranny cos it still has a good kick to it and responds pretty weill. My question is does the throttle potentiometer affect the tranny

Hello all, First post hear. I am having the same problem with my 93 325is. If the car sits for a while then you start it the TCM light comes on and the car drives very slow being stuck in 3rd gear. If you shut if off for a few seconds then restart the light goes off and the car runs great. I don't believe the tranny is bad just the TCM. I haven't called BMW yet for cost. but saw on another site that the 7 series cost around 25.00 and 45.00 to replace based on a flat 65.00 dollar per hour rate. Doesn't include diagnostics or taxes. This seems to be a pretty common problem and I am wondering if any of you have had this also? How did you fix it? Also, what was the cost?

Hey guys, I just called the dealer for a quote on the Transmission Control Module I was quoted $845.00 and a $48.00 core charge. I was told around $100 to program the the new TCM to the car. If you are having the issue with your auto warning light coming on and the car staying in 3rd then prepare to pay out the butt for this. I hope you can find a cheaper solution than this. Some ideas have been the battery connections and or the alternator. I am going to clean the heck out of my terminals and put some anti-corosion treatment on them. Then have the battery and alternator checked out. Thi

Check your battery connections. My neg was loose and my trans would not downshift at all. When i turned the car off and restarted the probem went away. Then would reappear at random times.
Found my neg terminal connection was loose. Tightened same, problem resolved.

Cheers,

transmission light comes on intermitently

I have had the same problem for quite some time. I just spoke with a BMW technician and based on the production date, the chip on the Transmission goes bad and there is a number for it.

It does not need to be programed, all you have to do is replace the EPROM which is located/accessed via the engine compartment by the Postive post terminal on ewall remove second cover and you will find the DME and the TCM.
I will be doing this next week and hopefuly it takes care of it.
Will try to post feedback once I'm done

I tried the chip on the TCM and it made things worst. However, while working on it I found out that the hose that connects the air mass sensor to the carb was broken. Whenever the car hessitated (while cold) it would put the transmission on limp mode. Fixed the hose and the transmission light is not coming on anymore. Let's see if I can return the chip back to the dealer, and hopefully the transmission ligth stays off as it should.
