Hi All

This is my first posting.

I have a 1996 328i convertible which uses approx 4 litres of oil a month, but there is no sign of a leak.

Is this a common problem with some of these engines.

My Z3 2.8 used no oil at all.

Can anyone help please.

How many miles in a month????

If you drive 5000 miles a month it could be normal, if you drive 50 miles a month, it's a problem.

We drive approx 350 miles a month in this car. No sign of oil from exhaust area or sign of a leak.

Performance is normal. Really confused.

Does anyone else have a 2.8 that does the same.

350 miles = 4 liters? No smoke or leaks?

Assuming your're burning it:
1. Bad oil rings
2. Bad valve seals
3. Somehow it is getting pulled into the intake manifold.

I would expect to see smoke and heavy carbon deposits on the tail pipe at that consumption rate.

The other possibility is an oil leak that only occurs at speed, rare, but it *can* happen. You need to get under the car and look REALLY closely for any signs of an oil leak.

If there is an oil leak causing this, I don't think you'd have to look really hard to find it. At that kind of oil consumption rate, the bottom of the car would have to be absolutely COVERED in oil from the engine back if it was due to a leak.

Could this be a bad oil separator?

From inexperience

I had the same issue with my 98 328i but the leak was from my power steering line. I argued with the mechanic for days that there was no sign of a leak anywhere in my garage or driveway. He pointed out that there are collection pans under the vehicle that will house fluid. I dont know that this applies with the oil area as well but............

Nobody yell-by my number of questions I admit this response is an uneducated one. I am only tossing an idea forward, relayed from a certified BMW mechanic (well I hope he was certified-he works at BMW [ohcrap]

I could be completely off here... but maybe it's gone into your coolant... maybe your head gasket has failed between a coolant duct and an oil duct, and the oil and coolant are mixing??? the coolant that goes into the oil is burning off,and the oil going into the coolant is circulating with the coolant and gradually replacing it!!????
It's late right now... so I'm probably just talking $h1t, but I drained coolant out of my 325e when I was pulling the engine out, and when the coolant settled, there was a layer of oil on top of the coolant. I was pouring oil into that car every other time I filled up with gas... granted my rings were shot, and probably my valve seals were too, and I was burning most of it, but still!, I had oil in my coolant.

maybe the oil your useing is too thin and need to use a higher viscosity oil ?
i noticed in other cars i've had that 10w30 isnt always the best to use even if its recomended thats why i use 20w50 and i havent had a problem ever?
i did have a fluid leak but it turned out to be transmission fluid [ohcrap]
