I have a '95 328 and the engine has lost all compression. It has only travelled 125,000kms. This has happened fairly suddenly. Can the engine be rebored and sleeved? Can I use the standard BMW pistons and rings if I do this. I am unsure about using another standard BMW engine block in case the same thing happens again. It is an aluminium block that has failed.

Hmmmm........It is extremely rare for bmw blocks to fail at that mileage, and it is even rarer for compression to be lost in all cylinders at once. I think it may be cam related. Take off the valve cover and see if the timing chain is still attached. Has it been over reved? Have you used a compression guage to check the cylinders?

The cam is turning, but we haven't had a chance to remove the head yet. Will let you know what it is when we do. My mechanic suspects that the nickel plating on the bore has come away, but I will be surprised if that is the case as it all happen suddenly. If that turns out to be the case, I do not want to use another BMW block. I would rather rebore and sleeve the existing one. It is early days to be thinking of that, I know, but I need to know if the BMW pistons and rings will be compatible with a sleeve in the cylinder as they normally run with the nickel plating.
