Can anyone tell me if the 4WD transmission is switchable or permanent on the 525 4x4?

I believe it is always in awd, but am not 100% positive. Call your local dealer and ask them or check the owners manual.

The AWD system on the 525 or 530 will be BMW's typical AWD system. It is a full-time AWD system and under normal conditions, it distributes 62% of the power to the rear and 38% of the power to the front. If any of the wheels are slipping, the system will transfer power accordingly. There is no manual control over the AWD system. The car is constantly running with that 62/38 power distribution and the system makes all the decisions when necessary.

I believe he means an E34 525ix(xi?)

I might be considering buying a new 5 series sedan or a Mercedes Benz E-320 CDI. I currently drive a 2000 528i, which is pretty peppy considering how big it is and with a small engine 193hp,206lbs torque with double vanos. Love the car. I heard that BMW's are coming out with new engines for all its 5 series models with all-wheel drive. Now my question is will the 525xi suit me better or the 530ix, and what will be the horsepower on these cars? My main buying objects are: Relablity, Performance, good gas millage, and comfort (im 6'4 315lbs ) [bmwdance]
