I am in the final stages of buying a '94 318i Convertible with 86,000 miles on it. Good price and great looking. I'm anticipating it being underpowered (compared to a 325 etc.) but being safe, great handling and fun to drive. But I've never had a BMW and need some help. I'd appreciate any info. anyone can share about this model. What maintenenc items should I expect in the (near?) future? Pros & Cons? Thanks for your input!

The 318's are known for needed a head gasket near 120k or so, sometimes also having a slightly warped head at that time. In the 94' you may still have the cheap water pump problem, that's all i can think of right now. anyone else?

Thanks for your comments about the head gasket. Cheap water pump problem? You mean like a new water pump in an American car? Sorry for my ignorance--but I am ignorant. In general, is the 318 one of the long-lived and really reliable BMW engines (if you service it regularly) or is it more on the quirky, tempermental side?

Hello Mike, the waterpump problems are from the plastic impalers. The newer pumps use metal impalers which are less prone to wear.
