Haven't heard that before.

I don't know how useful that will be, but it can't hurt.

Before you buy any car it needs to be checked out. A dealer should not balk at you wanting a third-party inspection (if you pay for it). If you have faith in the dealer, fine, but exercise caution, particularly with the smaller used car lot operations or non-BMW franchises.

hmm i went to the place today, cant really call it a dealer... found it on autotrader. the car was a mess, like totaly, someone who didnt have a clue what they were doing worked on it plus the car was painted and had some rust. the glove compartment had its back side cut off and there were wires running all around the car. i wouldnt pay 4k for it and he wanted 9k. anyways so the guy had a second bmw, 94 325IS it was all good, no rust, no problems, i checked the computer ( self check ) gave me 1222 so it was ok, just the check engine light was one, but he said its from cleaning. So we went to testdrive it. Im sorry to say i kinda got disapointed, the car accelerated ok, but not as i would expect ( keep in mind that i drive a olllldd ford taurus ) but i was still ok, what pissed me off the most was the steering, i dunno if thats the case in all the bmws ( thats my first bmw ;> ) but it seamed like i cant really turn whell with it. So tommorow im going to jacobs bmw to testdrive some other bmws hopefuly its gonna be better. Ah ps the guy was a f* di*head and pressured me to buy it, pretty sad. but i could care less.

Just in contrast to what brahtw8 says, you don't necessarily want to avoid cheaper-priced cars. You just want to be careful.

Why do I say this? Because I just bought in Feb, a 1995 325i with 103k miles, in almost mint condition. The backseats were almost brand new (the guy only used the car to commute, and no kids) and there were no mods on the car. And since then, I've had 0 problems, and I have changed the water pump and thermostat, and have a few more changes coming up soon.

However, it did take me about 3 months to find this deal and I was scouring the net. So the lesson is: if you look hard enough, you CAN find a great deal on a bimmer... however, if you don't look hard enough, those "great deals" really won't be great deals.
