To get the most effect from a mod MAKE SURE your car is running in tip top shape. An out of tune BMW with (light) mods will probably get beaten by an in tune BMW that is stock. Maintenance before mods...... [;)]

He is actually a little older than 16. I don't know his exact age, but I do know he has a family. Carcus is correct about a lot of things he says but I too think he is too negative when it comes to any kind of performance modifications. Just because it is really expensive to get performance parts for a BMW (eg. $350 for a CAI) does not mean that they won't work! And I don't think there is anything wrong with getting a new intake or exhaust of anything else like that for your car, and I don't think people should be discouraged just because it may not be a great deal. Not everyone wants a muscle car.

To answer your question. Yes, the chip will provide you with a noticble performance increase providing your engine is already in great running condition. Make sure you get a tune-up first and check the compression to make sure everything is running good; then add the chip.

i don´t see it as negative what he says. it is just about not believing in those chips. so don´t i. those chips, without any other work that really REQUIRES the chip, it is useless. i have tried it already and the result was higher gaz consumption, nothing else.
get some cams, exhaust system, pistons maybe....do the real deal and then a chip does a job cause those mods require another engine software. for a stock engine, a chip is a joke.

a totally different story of course are diesel engines. with them a chip can perform a small wonder. that type of engine really has some hidden power to unveil...

the magic bean hint actually is pretty nice and funny.

You came off pretty abrasive.....tell ya what, with what seems to be a chip question every other day.....use the SEARCH function......more chip crap than you can imagine.

actually i don´t know exactly ash. all i know is that in diesel engines there is much more possible in terms of timing the injection and so on. don´t ask me about to detailed stuff. but, with diesel engines it is also more risky. i have seen pics of melted pistons where a chip went too far and produced too much heat.
it is impressive. my in-law has an E320 CDI with brabus chip. that thing runs like crazy. when we had that chip installed we went there together. the trip back was a real move upwards on the performance side. you could really feel more power, especially as it was a 1,5 hours ride one direction...so enough time to really test it.

In all fairness the price shouldn't mean too much. The chips on eBay are copies of the very expensive software from Dinan and other tuners. All you need to copy the chips are some blanks and a $20 EEPROM writer. Just because it is cheap doesn't mean you're not getting a good product. If you put Windows XP on a CD-R and sell it for $5 it is the exact same thing you would be getting from microsoft for $150.

If I win it... I will give you my honest opinion if I notice any difference what so ever.
I bought my car new in 94 it has only 48,300 miles on it. In 2 months I am giving it
to my 16yr old daughter. As far as needing muscle in a car, Thats what my 1970
442 is for. Can you say BIG BLOCK? Most kids today dont even know what torque
feels like.

i would not try copy stuff. it sounds easy to copy them as pink_floyd describes it, but it also sounds easy to build an engine...in reality it is not. so, i would not risk a buck and even worse an engine just for a test...you have no control about what you buy there...
