How much of a performance difference would I notice if I changed my factory BMW air filter in my 96 328i to a K and N filter? [poke] Are they not pretty much the exact same filter.

You wouldn't really notice anything in terms of increased power. You would get a more beefy induction sound though.

If you get a cone filter you need to be careful because you can actually lose power in heavy traffic when there is little airflow through the engine bay. The cone filter does away with the ram-air scoop attached to the factory airbox.

My opinion is that non-factory air-filters and cone air-filters are a complete waste of money. You might get an extra 1-2hp in the right conditions which, really, isn't going to do shit. Added to this is the fact that a non-factory airbox kit probably allows more particulates into you engine.

I don't know exactly how often you should change the air filter because it depends on the use and conditions that the car is used in. If you get your car serviced regularly your mechanic should take care of that.

The fuel filter in my car is located under the rear seats so yours is most likely the same. But check in the E36 forum to get a definite answer.

Hope this helps.
