That happens when the airbag sensor malfunction. and it is located under the front passenger seat its a lot of work if you have power seats they have to remove the whole thing , happened to me last year. [wave]

The dealer will charge you an arm and a leg. I would phone around the local garages and ask if they are capable of extracting the error code and resetting the light.

In my case, my mechanic charged me $30. An error code indicating a short in the passenger belt buckle sensor was extracted. It was resetted and light has not gone on since. I guess it was raining out that day and some water must have seeped into the buckle and caused a momentary short.

I would only bring it to the dealer if the light comes back on and/or you feel the problem is beyond the capabilities of the mechanic.

Yeah, I agree 100% - this is one light not to skimp on :)

Just stopped in Princeton BMW for my first dealings with them. Needed both front grills for my car. They were suprisingly nice, quick, I wasn't outraged by the cost [:D] So, there is hope...

Mine stays on for the first couple of minutes the car is running and then goes off, my mechanic says only dealer can reset (must be a liability thing that he does not want resp. for if it malfunctions).

Here's one for all of you: I just took out the passenger seat and replaced the sensor, and the light is STILL ON. What now? The new sensor was brand new, and my mechanic siad this always solves the problem. Has anybody out there had to go the next step after replacing the sensor?

technicians should always reset the airbag trouble code when they have repair the problem. Sometimes many electrical issues can turn on the airbag MIL.
