I was out looking for the Street Carver and my dealer here has the Alpina Z8. Same car pretty much, but with a hard top. There is something that looks different, i should go back with a camera to get some pics. you think they'd mind?

Dealers always welcome people going down and snapping pictures of their inventory since its free advertising. [:)]

Actually, the Z8 looks so much like the BMW 507 (1956-1959) that it is scary.
The BMW 507 was one of BMW's first "sports cars" 2 seater, V8 engine - top speed of 140 mph (imagine going 140mph way back in '59 with poly belted tires and drum brakes).
I think that the Z8 was built as sort of a tribute to this rare (254 hand built) model.

I don't know if the Alpina is "slower". It doesn't have the same engine as the regular Z8. The regular Z8 has a S62 5.0, same as the M5. The Alpina has a 4.8 liter, which from what I understand is a punched out 4.6is motor from the X5. The Alpina has more torque, but fewer HP, but seeing how it's a damn automatic, it probably is a bit slower.

The reason why the Alpina Z8 is slower is because it only comes with a Automatic/Switch-Tronic transmission.

And Alpina will build 555 of this roadsters.
Ok the Alpina Z8 has been around for a fair ammount of time now. It IS slower than the normal Z8 not because of the 'box but because of the heavier weight and softer suspension! When BMW created the Z8 it was a confused little beast. Not knowing if it was a Boulavade Cruiser, Racer, or a intercontinental balistic mile muncher. they tried to make it all of them and so it is another comprimise. Alpina have tried to give it an identity and have gone for the crusier option as it is too heavy in reality to be a "supercar". They still havn't quite got it right as the suspension is still too hard and the exhaust doesn't burble but roars. oh well still a damned pretty car!!! and i'd still have one!

Hi

Please don't argue. I have driven the regular Z8 and the Alpina Z8 as well for few months and suspension is not softer at all. The Alpina is only slightly havier.

The regular Z8 M Powered has 3554 lbs.

The Alpina Z8 has 3571 lbs.

The difference is only 17 lbs and that is because of the gearbox which is bigger. Few pounds resulted also by adding those 20 inch rims.

But the difference in acceleration to 60mph is only 0.3/0.5 which is not very bad.
