depends on how you treat it and what you consider the "useful life" to be.

If you've got an automatic, it is somewhat likely that you'll have to replace the transmission within the next 50-60k miles.

Other than that, the engine will run forever (when treated correctly) and the cars are undercoated so rust shouldn't be a big issue. You might have to replace a VANOS unit at some point in time as well as a radiator or some other throw-away part, but that's about it, typically.

At 200k, I say that the car doesn't owe you anything anymore. At 250k, I'd probably be looking for my e46 replacement.

I have 150,000 miles on my 96. Orig clutch and radiator will need to be replaced soon but the engine is running real strong. The car's got very minimal rust on the edges of the hood. I think the engine will last so long that you'll get tired of fixing everything else on the car eventually. That's a personal decision on when that is. My 83 Saab was the same way. Over 200k and the motor was running great. Everything else was breaking and it just didn't make sense to keep dumping $ into it.

Thats encouraging. I have a manual and its still on the original clutch but 90% of my miles are highway without any stopping. I just replaced the radiator and i have also replaced the water pump.

Your good to go then. These cars can last forever as long as you do the preventative maint. Your car is actually in her prime right now. I prefer the E36 style over any other and plan to keep mine for a long time. Mine has 133K right now and going strong

I've got a 97 328i sedan with 196000kms and it's time to change the suspention...
I've changed the rad and the clutch already and the starter but that was because it wasn't installed properly the last time..... no i didn't do it!)

About the suspention, is there anything I can do to make it more sporty for about the same cost as the OEM stuff?

I'm not sure about the suspension. I know my car has the sports package so it has a sportier feel. Just getting high quality z rated tires will vastly improve the feel of your car.

Thanks guys.

I have Pirelli P6000's right now. I can't afford new ones yet because I would have to buy new rims as well, they are still 15" rims. I have a pic around here some where. When I find it I'll post it.

The list of parts the say I need is long... the dealer is the shop I had it at but I think I'm going to find another shop to get it done at. I wish I could do it myself but that is just to much for me I think.

Front shocks, ball joints, tie-rod ends, bushings, rear shock mounts... they also said the bushings in the shifter need to be replaced. I can feel that for sure. Last summer was the rad and the computer...
