Brake pad replacement

I just did my fronts this weekend. If you are just doing pads then it is simple... If you are doing rotors then it becomes quite a PIA. The caliper carrier bracket bolts are on tight as hell and I almost stripped one trying to get it off. Make sure you have a breaker bar and a can of PB blaster or liquid wrench handy.

dont let 93 325i scare you away, brakes are a sinch.


the guidebolts on the calipers are 6mm allen i think (mayyybe 9mm). the caliper carrier bracket bolts are 13mm hex (might be 16) and the rotor retaining bolt is 6mm (that could cause you some trouble)

16 is rarely used... should be 17mm on the caliper carriers, no?

and 7mm on the calipers i'm pretty sure.

17mm sounds right, i haven't pulled my brakes off since last summer

yeah i just remember it being the same size as the lug nuts. I'm not absolutely positive though.

Yea caliper guide bolts are 7mm on all bmw's i've worked on (e30, e34, e36). Rotors are easy too. Go buy yourself a set of cheap torque sockets... they wont strip the bolt, and get yourself a 2 or 3 foot breaker bar. Don't worry, you won't break anything.

carrier bolts 16mm regular socket
rotor hold down bolt is 6mm hex

It is easy...once you get the carrier bolts off...on mine at least they were quite a b*tch
