I need to get new brakes for my 1996 BMW 328is (E36). It is not breaking very well. Do I need pads or more than just front and rear pads? I can still break but it takes longer and I have to push harder and further into the brake pedal to stop. Do I need to replace the brake master cylinder and rotors besides new pads to fix my brake problem? I want to avoid the dealer to save money. But I dont want to take my bimmer to a cheapo place like Brake Depot because they will mess up my car. Any tips? Does anyone know of a good independent BMW mechanic in San Diego that performs reputable brake work on bimmers? I need to find the root cause of my brake problem and then I can always order the parts from Bavarian Auto to save money and just pay the independent shop to install the brakes. Thanks.

I would check the state of your discs first. Make sure there is plenty of meat left on them by running you finger along the face of the disc to the outer edge. There should'nt be too much of a differentiation in height between the disc and the steel runner.

Change the brake fluid if it hasn't been done in the past year and if the pads are worn buy some ATE's and put them in yourself - it's easy and should only cost you about $70 for a set of four pads.

Make an appointment for a brake inspection. Most places will do this for free (in the hopes that you will have the work performed there). Once you have the diagnosis/estimate, tell them that you have to ask your parents for the money/or check with your spouse first before making such an expenditure.
Then take it to another place for a second opinion.

i would definately have your brake lines flushed. i neglected mine and it built up a glob in the master cylinder and ruined it. again, it pays to be the network consultant of the shop i take my car. my mech put on a new cylinder and put it some nice racing brake fluid that has better temp control. have the entire thing flushed.
