cold air intake

i know this has been discussed but i am search illiterate..please...anyone know anything about home grown intakes or store bought ones? what kinda hp and or torque can i expect from a 2.8 lt? is it noisy as all get out? is there one or another that is better? costs? hydrolock issues? thanks in advance as i am new to bmw. I have experience with miata and S2000 but this is all new stuff for me!!!
