Have a clicking sound - sounds like hydaulic lifters - but the tempo of the clicking does not change with RPM's. It comes and goes but seems to be getting louder and more often. It appears to come from the driver side near the back of the motor?

that's a good one! I give up!

Crank up the stereo and it'll go away! Works every time.

(sorry, I'm of no use)

The only thing I can really think of is that there is a relay clicking away... but i don't think it would keep getting louder...

thats interesting, my car has developed exactly the same sound, from the same place. Kindof a "ticka-ticka-ticka-ticka-ticka-ticka" sounds that doesnt change with rpm. It doesnt get louder either as when i rev higher it seems to drown out. You can hear it loudest standing right beside the front of the driver (or passenger) side door next to the car.

This is so weird. I was Googling for some info related to strut replacement on my E36, and this link mysteriously was in the results. This guy says it is the evaporative emission control system's purge valve. And BMW knows of the problem, and makes a noise isolation kit, see the second picture. For all the dirty details check out the link.

PLEASE let us know if this is your problem, I'm curious!!
