fan clutch

the fan clutch will make the mechanical fan run faster or slower depending on how much heat is radiating off of the radiator.

If the fan clutch is bad the fan will only operate at slow speeds and can cause your car to overheat if you are sitting in traffic or not moving. Highway speeds will not overheat. It is only necessary at idle and low speeds. When the clutch is engaged you can hear the fan wrrr if you rev your car a little after sitting for a little while.

hope this helps as it was a little difficult figuring to what the question was....

If your car is overheating you need to rule out a few things like:
Am I losing coolant?
When is it overheating? in traffic? highway? both? AC on when overheating?
Air in the cooling system?

The fan clutch is variable speed. The speed changes depending on the heat as mentioned. Its a thermo coupling basically. They are used because on the highway it reduces drag and wear and tear of the fan resisting the air. The fan shouldnt spin like its on a ball bearing. It should only spin a few times and stop and off. If its warm it should have some resistance behind it.

You really can't tell the condition of a head gasket by looking at it. I'm assuming you replaced the head gasket and did not use the old one? I agree with M5 runner, if you got to the trouble of pulling the head for a heat problem, you REALLY should have the head checked for cracks and check it for warpage.
