I've got a 2000 528i and during the hot summer we've had here on the east coast, I've noticed a loud "humming" noise coming from the fan in the front of the engine. It happens when the AC is on and it's not moving (I'm guessing that it's how it generates airflow for the AC system).
But it's really loud and just doesn't sound normal to me - sort of like it's running too fast or hitting something. I took it to the dealer once and they replaced the fan. Same problem. I took it to the dealer again and this time they told me that it was normal. They checked with BMW, evidently, and were told that it was a known issue, but that it was normal to have such a loud fan.
I think that they're full of it - any thoughts?
