Front wheel side to side play

Please can somebody help........
I recently replaced the lower front right wishbone in an attempt to correct a wobbly wheel, this has not worked and am now concerned about the amout of play. Closer inspection found that when i move the wheel from side to side there is about 1/4 inch play, the strutt moves too and the track arm from the steering rack moves in and out of the boot. I have tried the other front wheel and there is no movement at all. Does this mean that the rack is worn one side and needs to be replaced or can one side be adjusted?
Any help is greatly appreciated!

check your balljoints,tie rod ends,and the wheel bearings.

Thanks... I thought of those but when i changed the wishbone it has a new ball joint, the bearing i think is ok because there is no top and bottom play only side to side....? The location of the play is the rack arm that connects to the tie rod. When i move the side side to side the arm moves in and out of the boot by about 1/4 inch. I have tried to do this on the other side and it does not move. I can get a new rack for a good price, how much of a job is it to replace the rack?

changing a rack on a e36 isn't that bad.while you're at it,get some good p/s fluid with a high boiling point as well.
