Fuel Filter

can anyone tell me where the fuel filter is on a 1986 535i. I tried to follow the fuel line from the tank under the car, but I did not see it. Is it under the hood somewhere? [bmwkick]

I think it is under the rear passenger side, around the wheel housing. I am sure it is not under the hood.
