Grinding the gears

Today I was at a stop light when my buddy in a camaro pulled up. He reved his engine and i'd figure we'd give it a go. (This really isnt street racing because we only get to second gear or 35 to 40mph and no one really cares who wins. There isn't a finnish line either, we just both lift) We'll I bogged off the line, but i figured it'd still keep my foot in it. I'm not sure if i got excited or what but I only pushed the clutch in halfway and I JAMMED second and ground it. This was the worst noised I have ever heard. I put the car in to third and followed my friend to the taco bell. He, like any good friend, made an ass out of me for destroying my gearbox. On the way home I tested second. I drove it straight to the readline. Nothing. I got on and off the throttle. Nothing. The only problem was 2nd clicked only while shiting quickly from first. I'm not sure if the car always did it or if this is a sign of MAJOR problems.

You didn't do anything that will keep it from working, becuase of your reaction, the gears were only grinding for maybe half a second if that. I've don it before, and the reason is becuase the synchromesh in 2nd gear wears down so fast compared to the other gears, so even though that kind of shifting into 3'd, 4th, and 5th would work. It is super embarrasing, but it happens. I havent ground gears for quite a while just becuase it happened a few times and I taught myself to be extra careful.

as everyone said, nothin´ to worry about too much. with E36 it is quite often the first gear that has a problem (with often i mean the number of gear the total gearbox issues is about the first you know). when sit at a red light and put in 1st it can jump out with a bang when you want to take of. just a sidenote. my E36 had that too. it happened only some times, like 6-7 or so.
