HELP!! My car will not start!!

I have an automatic 4dr e36 and it will not start. This all started today after a drive to the store. I pulled into my driveway and put it on park and turned the key counter clockwise (like usual) and it would not turn the car off. After repeated times of moving it back and forth it finally turned off. I was worried that something was damaged so I decided to turn the car back on, the key would go all the way forward and it would not turn the car on. It does not seem to be anything electrical because my stereo turns on and my lights go on bright aswell. Im not sure what it could be, ignition switch?....Neutral safety switch?...Any suggestions? I want to narrow the problems down before I take it to the repair shop..HELP!!

You say the car would not turn off when you put the key in the "off" position? With that clue, it almost HAS to be the ignition switch assembly...but sorry, I don't have any helpful suggestions other than to replace it.

Hey thanks.. Is the ignition switch asembly something that a lock smith can fix or is it better to replace completely?

Safe bet its going to be a replacement.

I put an order out for a new one, does anyone know how to pop the old one out?
