K - I know this is a total newbie type question, but that's what I am. I'm looking at buying a used 2001 740 and have been checking out locally available models on the 'net. My question is, what are the differences between the 740i/iL/iA/iLA models? As I understand it, the "L" mean it's an extended wheelbase model, but the rest of the badging is a mystery to me!! Please help!!

Thanks! [chair]

"i" used to stand for injection back in the day when BMW built carbureted cars. Today it means nothing.

"A" is for automatic. You won't see an A on the rear badge. It is an internal designation only.

The 740i is the short wheel base and the 740il is the long wheel base. I have a 2001 740il , I love this car. I have all the options and it's great. I just purchased the car as a certified used car for 32,000.It is a good price for a car of this quality and lots of power .
