Sorry to keep beating this thread but I just got a look at the smog results and my HC level is now 6. [confused] . Either these people are friggin god with BMWs (which they should be for $100/hr) or this was really a small problem that could have been fixed for alot less. At first I thought that they put in a new oxygen sensor to get these results but they didn't at all. Now the question is why was the bill $200 for this??? God I hate the mechanics who try to take advantage of people who need the car fixed for smog issues. Anyways...I think that it must just have been a bad electrial connection or something because they even said that the timing was fine!?! Any ideas what connections could have been loose that would allow for such a miraculous and timely fix??? Should I still replace the oxygen sensor on my own? Thanks for any ideas.

I wonder if they put another car through, and charged $200 as a fee...sounds like a sympathy pass to me. I know it's been done by a friend before for $100; shows how ungrateful people are...

I know several smog check places that don't charge you if you don't pass, or at least that's how they advertise themself :) you do the math, passing smog check is not really an issue if you are willing to pay a little more and go to the right place.

I agree completely, what bothers me is when people complain that the price they charge is too high... It's either that or the junkyard.

In NY State it's every year... I wonder if BMW includes the fee for it in their maintenance program, next month they're doing the 1yr oil service (I'll just happen to have 7500 miles on it by then) and the emissions inspection.

Well I looked at the labor report and I guess that they looked at the codes and saw "knock" errors on startup. They cleared all of the codes, as stated on the paper. Could this have single-handedly fixed the problem with HC emmisions? Thanks for any input!!

i'm just glad that there's no emissions test in michigan. or at least i haven't had to be tested for one..

well OP, i'm glad you passed the test, one way or another. important thing is you passed the test, and with flying colors to boot! i hope it wasn't a "pity pass" as some are suggesting. nothing like following a stinky ass to ruin one's mood.

i would try to do some more research into the matter, and figure out what to do from there. like replacing an O2 sensor and such. besides isn't having a car w/ low HC emissions also good for you? along with other drivers around you?

Clearing the codes would not have any effect on the emissions.
