First i want to say hello, im new.

I came by to find some advice for me and my sister. She has a 328i 1996 bimmer.

She recently purchased this car and i really like it too. It feels sporty yet luxurious too. The car is in excelent conditions.

Unfortunately she is having a problem with it.

She recently poured an injector cleaner in an almost empty tank (i know thats crazy but she's doesnt know much about cars). After that the engine randomly stalls and sometimes until it stops. It can do it various times. Sometimes the engine wont run (altho its not doing it so often now). When it doesnt have the issue it runs perfectly.

I explained her that she should had poured during filling the gas tank. After this, she took the car for service. They said that it was probably the injectors and they recommended her to replace the injectors. Remember that my sis doesnt know much about cars so she believed them. :-/

After that and $300, the engine still stalls and my sis got ripped off. I feel really sad for her because she had goo intentions for her bimmer and this happened a few days after i got married and i moved out. So she didnt want to disturb me. I was curious and asked her about the car and she told me this. I really hate how mechanics can take advantage of people of little knowledge for cars, and specially my sis.

They did scanned it, so here are some codes that i think r more relevant:

245 Secondary Air System Cyl 1-3
246 Secondary Air System Cyl 4-6

233 Catalitic Efficiency Bank 1
234 Catalitic Efficiency Bank 2

83 Crankshaft Position Sensor - The service guy pitched to my sister that this may be the problem and that it was recalled by BMW....

65 Crankshaft Position Sensor

This all happened after she poured the INjector Cleaner. I Beg for you opinions and help about this issue. Thank u and God Bless, btw nice forum. :)

This is why additives should never be put in a car, especially a fine-tuned machine like a BMW. If the sensor is infact a recall then it should be replaced, free of charge.

Heck, that sounds like a lot of problems to have from using Injector cleaner, albeit using without filling the fuel tank, but surely she would have had some fuel in the tank for the additive to mix to some extent and she would have had to re-fuel fairly immediately as well as a small bottle of injector cleaner is nto going to get you far.

Like its been mentioned above, if one of the crankshaft sensors was a recall, BMW should replace that without charge. If not, crankshaft sensors are not all that expensive surprisingly. (I just bought one for my 328i, cost me £55 at BMW)

I am puzzled at the catalytic efficiency codes though, and this is where it could get nasty. It is possible the injector cleaner may not have been suitable for the car (as there are different types) ? and as a result has it damaged the catalytic converters?

There is nothing wrong with fuel additives, depending on what they are and how they are used. I have been using Redline's SI-1 injector cleaner for years, in fact most of the dealers around the Seattle area sell it. I do not believe the injector cleaner is your problem, it sounds like the crankshaft sensor which can cause the car to run as described.

Yeh but why would a crankshaft all of a sudden fail because of injector cleaner ?.

Hav u tried filling up with decent grade fuel which has fuel cleansers in it.

I would fill it up to the top and go and give it a good thrashing to get all the crap out.
