how many miles on your clutch

just wondering how many miles people have put on their clutch. i've put ~61K on my original clutch and it seems to be running ok (other than it locking me out of first once in a while). i realize that the life span of the clutch is directly related to how hard one drives.....just want to see what other people's thoughts were.....

well i'm not sure how long mine has been on the car (as i bought it used), but i've put about 22 thousand on it and i'm probably going to be getting a new one within the next few months. My car has about 120 thousand miles on it, so I'm figuring that this is clutch number 2. And yes... It is locking me out of first at times, just like yours.

i have 94k on mine, probably get one within 10k. though i have been driving exceptionally hard lately.

bmw-m-freak do you have any idea why the clutch locks you out at times?

+60k with me and running goog. same problem with the 1st gear. as far as i know, it is not a problem of the clutch but the gear itself. the synchronizing or the gear itself seems to be worn down a little and sometimes causes the gear to pop out. shift properly and it is okay. at least with me.

yep, being locked out is purely synchro's. sometimes, and especially with dogboxes, you have to start the car even just slide it into gear.

My 91 318is has the original clutch and 131k on it. I am guessing I will need one by 150k.

i guess the mechanic at bmw wasn't kidding when he said bimmer clutches are known to last much longer than other cars if treated properly!!!!!!!!!!!!

I just changed mine (original) a few weeks ago at 192k only because the trans. needed to be resealed. The clutch still had some life left. Shifts much smoother now though.

That's right BMW clutches do last a very long time. I bought my car with a brand new transmission and clutch that was installed around 100k and the person that owned it before me never put a new one in until she bought the new tranny (burned out the 2nd gear synchro) Yes locking you out of gear is pure synchros. It has nothing to do with the clutch, however if you double clutch you can get it to shift easier. Just don't downshift into first (you never should anyway) and you should be ok.

I have nearly 130k and my clutch is fine, i should get one soon, but i am ignorant and won't get one till mine goes out. My girlfriend with an e36 hadto get one around 135k, only because it was the throw out bearing that went out, not the disk.

it all depends on what you demand of your car. if i drove like an old person i could use my clutch for another 60k or more, but because i like to lay it down from time to time, clutch slip just won't do. 10k max for mine, i will get too depressed with my car if i feel, hear, and see much more slip.

if you are demanding that much from your car then you should be using something other than a factory type clutch? how many times have you changed it? and what are you putting in?
