Not yet, but a vanos unit has gone bad. You will now when this happens. Not really a loss of performance. I guess mine was not damaged that bad, but you could here it around 4k rpm.

I don't think you should be concerned about breaking the timing chain. AFAIK, it doesn't break under normal conditions, but simply becomes loose when replacement is needed.

these are great numbers. i mean most other cars fall apart after the type of miles that a bimmer can endure. what about the m3s? do they last as long as the regular 3series? i would think they wouldn't because they are either driven much harder or whatever. what do you guys think?

Vanos?? I've never heard of it-sorry.
I had timing chain go on my Peugeot 505 turbo diesel at 130K Made a cute "ping" sound, car just rolled to a stop. Most expensive "cute" sound I ever heard!
Well the "I do " from 1ST wife would fall under that category......
