i noticed some vibration during idle(whole car vibrating) . the car can be in neutral or stopped at the light and will start vibrating pretty bad. not a violent vibration but mild, it just makes me worried. after I noticed the vibration I changed oil, oil filter, spark plugs, fuel filter, k&n filter, cabin filter, o2 sensors front and back. I've been putting in a fuel injector cleaner during every oil change and nothing helps. does anyone have any other suggestions or ideas what it could be? This car is in tip top shape other than the vibration. I have a 318i 98. sounds like the engine could be running rough, but what can I do to repair the problem? please help

I had the cell problem in my 318is and after changing many parts in the engine from coils to hydraulic lifters, I never ever managed to get rid of the vibration. I hjave been led to beleive that is a charectiristic of the car. Cut a long story short, sell the car and buy a 6 cylinder or live with the problem. DON'T spend anymore money on the car as it will never cure the vibration.

How mild are the vibrations?

My gear knob sometimes vibrates in neutral, but that's as far it goes. And it's not even enough that when I put my hand on the knob I cannot feel the vibrations.

Hi,
I had a 98 318 IS until a few weeks ago that used to vibrate noticeably when it was in neutral. I had a full service done on the car in November and mentioned this to the mechanic (not a BMW dealer but well known in the area for knowing everything about BMs). He said not to worry about it, as the 318's are well known for having this vibration and it's not a mechanical fault - just a characteristic of the car.
So if I were you, i wouldn't worry too much about it.

Have you checked your engine mounts? your car is say near 8yrs old the 1.8 is a big lump of an engine and vibes can cause wear in your engine mounts, also check your timing (its a flat 6?) if one piston is off it will cause vibration.
