Instrument Cluster replacement question

The plastic lens on my instrument cluster is damaged as the previous owner used something (armour-all, I presume) that messed it up. I have been looking at used clusters on Ebay, being interested mostly in the plastic part using my existing guages.

1) Is this difficult to switch out?
2) Is it possible to just buy the plastic case holding the guages?
3) I have been thinking about getting a sportier look by getting some guages that are inverse, but was told that the 6 and 4 cylinder guages are not compatible because the two engines "rev differently." Is this true or does this only apply to the M3? Has anybody put an instrument cluster from a 6 into a 4 and had problems?

Thanks

Here is the link where a guy mentions the "reving" problem:

switching the entire gauge cluster is not that hard, there are 2 torx bits (to take off the air bag). One bolt for the steering wheel, and 2 philips head screws to unattach the cluster, then just pull and unplug.
