Is changing an automatic transmission to auto/Steptronic mission impossible?

I have problems on my e46 318i 1999, specificly its transmission. I would like to change the tranny and put in an auto transmission with steptronic. i have all the parts still in an accident damaged car thus would like to find out if it is possible at all. Will it only require that i transplant the steptronic box + its control unit or are there more complex issues to it?

im stuck until someone guide me

You didn't specify the model/year of the damaged car so you have not given near enough info. The probability is no.

You can figure out if the transmission itself might fit. Go to www.realoem.com and research the parts for each car to figure it out. Right off the bat they list two automatic transmissions for your car:

thanks for the reply, the damaged car is a 2001 model before the facelifts and yes i have checked the parts and have noticed there are 2 types of boxes, the one on my car is the smaller type but the one you have sent me is also listed. I am pretty sure it will fit as i have all the other parts including propshaft and also both control units on the damaged car and its wiring. What do you think?

well the gearbox looks like the one you have attached. the difference is that my original gearbox has 2 plugs and the steptronic has only one plug. would it then be possible if we plant the transmission+controlmodule+wiring loom of tranny into my car?

sounds too complex but there should be a way!

The devil is in the details. Sorry, I don't have any specific knowledge about this, but my guess is that the control signals for the step are different.
