I have heard that a 550 to repalce 545 is going to be built this Spring-05. The rumored engine is 4.8 liters or 5.0 and develops just shy of 370bhp. Anybody confirm this?

Well they are going to replace the 745i with the 750. Which will have the 5.0 Valvetronic V-8. I'm not sure about the 550, but I don't see why not.

Yeah, my friend/sales rep told me he heard that it was going to be a reality. He even referenced this spring. I'm still waiting for that Performance Pkg. to arrive here in US for the 545. If I were BMW I would definitely bring that 550 to market along with performace pkg. That powerplant could put the 0-60 performance in the 5 second area, assuming weight of engine is not significantly higher.

I've heard the same thing Scott mentioned about the 750, but nothing about the 550.

I'm sure in order to keep production cost down, it would make more sense if they dropped the 4.8 liter and went with the 5 liter all together.

Yeah definitley the 5.0 thus the 550 designation. I was real suprised to hear it, but if they are doing it with the 7 why not the 5. It's not like the 550 would be any threat to the M5. I don't think too many people will pull off the M5 waiting list for the 550. I might though if it comes out. The difference in payment between the 5 and M5 could put a nice sports car in the garage. Infiniti G35 Coupe or C6 Vette...

Wouldn't they just drop the 4.4 engine and update it to the 5.0 and stick that in the 545i??? 550i just doesn't sound right. (Like the 540i had a 4.4 in it...but it wasnt called a 544i as that would sound whacky right?)

sales rep confirmed that they are starting production on the 550 in the late spring and should be available for delivery around sept/oct. he's urged me to wait as i went into order a 545 for euro delivery. the v-8 is supposed to be a more efficient (fuel consumption) engine as well. supposedly the new engine for the 3 series claims to increase fuel economy by around 22%.

Any mention of power output from engine and size?

BTW- That is one cool sales guy. Most want the sale ASAP.

The 2006 750i and 750Li will feature a new 4.8 liter VALVETRONIC V8 engine capable of 360 horsepower (SAE net) and 360 lb-ft of torque. The new models are even more responsive than their predecessors, with a 0-60 mph time of just 5.8 seconds.

Looks like this is the 550 engine...

Is it just me, or is this "new 4.8 liter Valvetronic V8" simply the 4.8 liter V8 from the X5 4.8is? I am gonna go ahead and conclude this is the case.
I would really like to see the 360hp V8 in the 5-Series as I always believe that the 5-Series is BMW's best car. The 3-Series compromises on luxury and the 7-Series compromises on sport, but the 5-Series is like the balance of the two. Maximum driving comfort and maximum driving sport in one car.

I am pretty happy with this 550 coming out. My friend/Sales rep told me fall 05. I was going to forge ahead with the M5 and endure first year production bugs, but now BMW has made it easier for me to go with a regular 5. I figure with the money I save I just might park a sweet sports car next to the 550. I guess you could say almost two cars for the price of one. I lease so it is almost 2 payments for one M5.

I've also heard that the 550 will be a reality. But the 545 already hits 60 in 5.3-5.5 (w/manual). If the new engine is as poweful as its supposed to be, I don't see why these times shouldn't approach 5 sec.... [driving2] [ohcrap]

The 4.8 liter 550 engine is pretty much a go for September delivery to US dealers. I know of a couple people that have been told they can order the car in May for September delivery. Specs are 360 hp, 360 tq. It should be close to the E39 M5 in performance!

In theory the 550 should not be too far off the E39 M5. Does anyone know why they decided to bump up the power so soon in the model run? Maybe because of the 750. Thank the hp wars going on today for this bump up.

I think BMW is getting pasted in the HP wars. Especially in the 5 series. The increase in the 545 to 550 is a good move on their part to keep ahead of the curve. It's a great time to be an auto enthusiast!!

As an additional comment - the most recent Motor Trend has a good review of the Infiniti M45. They are posting 0-60 in 5.3 and quarter mile times of 13.8 - the same as the current 545!

I agree somewhat, but not one production sedan in that price range will best the 545's performance numbers. Not the E500, A6-4.2 or any Japanese offering.
If the numbers pan out the 550 will be in the Cadillac CTS-V territory.

I am going with the 550, because it will be the fastest non factory moded sedan out there. If they keep the weight the same I would like to think we could see a 4.9-5.0 second 60. I love my 540 so the 550 will be great. Drives better now than when new. For my neck snapping speed I may go with a C6 to park next to the 550.
