I'm a crazy poster today...

Anyone have a K&N cone filter installed on their E36? Had any problems with it? Noticed any difference in performance other than the cool sound?

I'm pretty sure carcus will have something to say on this but before he does let me second what will be his motion to see some actual data from a dyno before and after putting on the cone.

See aa intake and turner shark inj!. topic that's going on today and search "cone filter" for some reading background.

An air filter will not give you any more than probably 1/4 horsepower boost. I dont understand why all these people make a big deal about them. Yes they do sound a LITTLE different...but they dont provide performance levels enough to be worth the 40 - 50 bucks they cost.

check the full text data. the numbers listed on the dyno sheet is the avg. gain. you'll see in the full text version that there was actually a max increase of 8hp and 8tq. AA is well known for their products and i can testify to their quality and performance gains. i have an aa intake and can honestly say that the power felt is what i was impressed with. not the sound!!! by the way, they actually use k&n.

$350 bones for an air filter, a tube, and a shield.....OUCH. By the way, they did the dyno, your results might be different. A 5hp gain will not be a BAM!!!!! What a boost!!!! WOW!!!!! feeling.[;)]

Another consideration: The aftermarket filters often do a very poor job at filtering out the little particles that like to get into your engine. That performance gain may come at the expense of engine longevity.

Ok, then maybe we should kick the asses of aftermarker airfilter companies by making some advanced air filtering technology which does not restrict at all!! Like, use some high-voltage particle polarizer. What it will cost? Hm... Oh, and what will be the gains? Anyone thinks its worth the effort? No..
Tell you something - the aftermarket performance airfilter stuff is worth only if intake/exhaust flow improvements have been done. And nothing is better than simply bigger airfilter with cold-air intake. The cone-style arfilters may sound cool and make you think that this is your tyre-burning blasting performance is roaring once released from cone filter but actually in most applications this is even worse because engine is breathing hot air from engine compartament. But if you want just some cool sound, its ok to waste some 50$..
