when accelerating hard from a dead stop the rear wheels seem to be slipping and I hear a loud clicking sound from the rear.....can it be the limited slip or a bad differential?

This definitely doesn't sound good. If its an actual CLICKING instead of a vibration and a "hitting", get your rear end checked out (the subframe and body). E36's have a problem with the rear subframe ripping out of the body - or the body cracking and then making clicking noises when under stress. Good luck!!

Dreaded E36 rear subframe doom!

I thought I had the same problem but it was only the control arm bushing
