muffler

My muffler is starting to making sputtering noises when it is really cold in the morning, and it's even affecting air flow. It also making this fun-ny noise--quite literally, the noise sounds like "funnnnnnnnnn" and then "funnnnnfunnnnnnnn;" almost like a muffle. I hope that description helps. How much longer do I have until I need to replace it?

I was planning on replacing it soon but arising circumstances make me want to put it off for a few months; will leaving this muffler affect my engine, or get to a point that it'll become too noisy. I have no clue as to the affect of an aged / dilapitated muffler, so all comments are appreciated.

Thanks.

It'll just get more noisy I think - which is a good thing! Eventually, you will have to replace it though as it will make the car unroadworthy.
unroadworhy meaning noisy?

The only thing it could do is decrease the back pressure of your exhaust perhaps giving you less torque. Pretty sure nothing damaging, just noisy.

Maybe the unroadworthy comment is directed at local statutes which make it illegal to operate a vehicle with a defective muffler due to noise ordinances. The kind of thing tuners and harley riders deal with.

Personally, I am going to wait until spring to upgrade my exhaust (no sense putting it on before winter comes to rot things away with salt). What are the popular exhaust systems (cat-back) for the 325i (93)? I had a techtonics tuning stainless cat-back with borla on my GTI. It was a little too loud to be honest (am I getting old?!). I don't want to be miserable going down the highway because of the droning exhaust. But a nice fat note would be good. I actually like the stock note my bimmer has right now, which probably means the muffler is tired. :)

It almost sounds like the internal baffles have come loose. I had the same problem with mine. At the time the car was being prepped for sale (to me), and the dealer replaced the system with a stock one...
