Multi-information Display

The MID in my car has some broken crystals and is a fairly low-end one, anyway. This doesn't really matter to me, but it did raise a number of questions in my mind:

a) Can you replace a more functional one for a less? Are the connectors the same? If so, is this expensive?
b) Has anyone worked on a solution to transfer the data received on the connected to a PCI/ISA card for a computer? I assume this would take some soldering and all, but could it be done?
c) Could data be drawn directly from the ECM, giving a wider array of possible data?

a) basically i think it is possible. however, i have no clue how much modding would be requested or what parts would be needed if so ever.
b) no one that i know
c) that seems to be pretty much what the shop does. faulty codes read etc. there are machines out there for sale that give you access to that sort of data.
