Hi, I just purchased a 1993 BMW 320i. It did not come with an owners manual and so I have a few questions about the controls. All advice is appreciated, thank you all in advance.

1. How do I set the time?
2. What does that mic/speaker on the center dash control do?
3. What does the "memo" button do?
4. There is a switch which has the settings "S", "E", and a picture of a snowflake, what are these settings? (my car is an automatic)
5. My operating temperature is just a bit over half - need I be concerned?
6. The button with a picture of 3 arrows pointing in a circular motion is recirculation?

Thank you all very much in advance for your help.

Sharon from Canada.

I can help with 3 of them.

1) If it's like mine, then hold down Set and clock at the same time for a few secods and the display should tell you to now set the clock.
2) Mine rides just past the half mark all the time. No problems
3) Yes. When you hit the button you will hear the vents open and close. Good for going through smelly parts of town. [;)]

1. Dont know how to set the clock
2. Probably for the cellphone
3. Is it for the seats? If the seats are power adjustable, it is probably the memory button for them.
4. Sport mode, economy mode, and i guess bad weather(??) mode.
5. That is good - exactly where it should be.
6. Yes it is recirculation.

Item 3. The memo button setting on the computer center is for a reminder of when the hour is approaching. When you set it the car will beep at you just before the top of the hour so you can change your radio to the news program and hear the headlines. That's it, those crafty Germans.

2. if it is the one located at the climate corntrol unit, it is the sensor that measures the temperature for the climate control

4. in addition to epj who is right with sport and eco, the snowflake means winter mode, the car will start in 2nd gear only to avoid skidding of the rear tires

5. be concerned when it narrows towards the red zone....middle is just fine.

6. hint for the recirc button, don't use in rain without aircon on. the car will get foggy. faster then you can think.

oh, btw, welcome [thumb]

The snowflake up by the temp controls is the AC button, push in to turn on AC.
If you have a snowflake down on the console by the automatic transmission shift lever (one of three buttons) that is the winter (inclement) setting for the transmission. Should you ever need to use this setting in your BMW you have screwed up in your choice of vehicle for the day, you should have picked an AWD Audi, Volvo XC or BMW 3 or 5 series sport wagon.[:D]

1.) You set the time by holding the "time button and the "set" button at the same tim for a few seconds, then youll be able to use the numbers "1000" "100" "10" and "1" to set the time. same for sate except you hold "date" and "set"
2.) mic/speaker im not sure may be for car phone, but since in 93 there werent car phones , Im not sure
3.) memo means the car will beep 3 times one minute before each hour. So if you hear three tones or beeps thats why.
4.) s is for "sport" meaning higher rpm shifts and faster exceleration. e is for normal driving and snowflake is for im assuming driving in snow. (less torque so wheels dont spin on ice etc.)
5.) opearting temp is fine
6.) Yes, that is for recirculating air. Shuold be used when the a/c is on.

-Hope that helps!

Not real sure but I think the mic looking thing was a sensor for the climate control. My Lincoln Mark VIII had the mics for the cell in the windshield pillar. Funny thing is I never use my BMW CPU...thinking about taking it out and installing a TV in there over the sunglass case. I only use the CPU for the check sensor and the temp. The gas milage and range never seem to be accurate. It does have alot of pretty buttons though. Guess us guys like that.....until you hit the memo button....then wonder what the hell the beeps mean....LOL....been there done that.[:p]

In response to the dude and cell phones in '93. A friend's '92 525i has the factory cell phone sitting in the console between the seats maybe it wasn't a 3 series option in '93 but it was there for BMW in the 5. I was sitting in a Renault in '89 outside of London talking on an in hands free car phone.
Again I'm siding with carcus the little thing in the dash is a temp sensor.

Home now and looking at the manual
The thing in the dash is an "air intake for temperture sensor -- do not cover"
Cell phone was an option for the '94 but has a separate manual.

the sensor thing in the center dash needs to be cleaned out with a vaccum cleaner now and again, especially if u smoke or live in dusty conditions
