I'm looking at buying a '92 325i.The car has 204000 miles on it.I can get it at a good price, but I would like to know approx cost of a 2.5 rebuild.Any ideas? I'm not looking at full bore race motor, but instead maybe a mild build. I'm not sure that the current motor would pass emissions inspection.
The car is in pretty good shape, will need some upholstery work(no big deal)and has a straight body.

Thanks for any info or links in advance.

Thanks for the links guys. I want to know what kind of $$ outlay so I can NEG. with seller. The prospect of a change doesn't frighten me.I look at it as a great opportunity to upgrade performance.:)

Keep the current engine and slip the emissions guy $100 to put another car through and slap the sticker on your car.[:D]

Otherwise I'd upgrade the engine to a 2.8 from the 2.5...

the 2.8 is OBD II as far as I know and the 2.5 is OBD I so I don't know how that will work out. If your going to upgrade the engine, might as well go with the euro 3.2 M3 engine, heh. Otherwise if you don't want to change the block and don't think you can do all the work yourself, might be a good idea to just go to a local shop and ask them how much a rebuild with a little bit more ooomph will be and then see from there, maybe shop around. I guess some things to consider are performance cam shafts, manifolds, boring it out a bit more, maybe bigger injectors, makes sense if your going to do the intake manifold. I'm sure you know this but I don't think it might be too much more expensive to get performance parts when you have to rebuild anyway. I am not too mechanically inclined but I do know that a rebuild engine with performance in mind can mean lots of fun and sometimes not that much more expensive to do. Oh and if your going to do what Bmw 325i 7803 told you about the emissions, make sure they don't have cammeras because lately it has been hard for the emissions people to fake stuff, one slip up and bye bye license. Well, godd luck with whatever you consider doing, hope it turns out good for you.

Well that euro engine is 14k..... you're right he probably should get a rebuild 2.5 engine. As for the emissions thing it only works if you're friends with the guy, and this was a few years ago I'm not even sure if it's still possible. It's worth a try though...

Yeah, thats what I meant, if your friends with the guy and all. It still works now, a friend of mine is getting his 79 trans am inspected that way and its exactly 100 bucks, hehehehe. The car doesn't even have a CAT so its the only way. And the 14k is a bit over the top, just put it there.

Anybody done an engine change themselves? Wondering how it relates in time , trouble , fustration. I've done change outs in many V-8 domestics (trucks) and some 6 and 4's in cars.Only thing foreign was an '84 VW rabbit(my buddies) and I was too drunk [drinking] to remember that experience [clap]
