I'm sure that all the major synthetic oils are fine. Indeed, BMW recommend Castrol these days but, ultimately, that's down to sponsorship etc, etc (think BMW-Williams).

Oil recommendations

I just joined the forum, Just purchased a 93 325i. I will be changing my oil soon and I will be putting in Mobile 1. I was a manager for Jiffy Lube and have a little experience with motor oil. I have used Royal Purple in the past and Penzoil full Synthetic in my 1999 Suburban. The Royal Purple seemed to be an alright oil, but no significant improvement. My Suburban went through at least a quart of oil every 3000 miles with Penzoil. With Mobile 1 I could feel the difference and no oil usage. I've heard that Amzoil is very good, but have no experience with it. I stick with Mobile 1 oil & filters. From what I've seen & read they are the best. Just as an FIY if you want to flush your motor we did the following on our personal vehicles.

Drain the oil and put on a new oil filter. Fill the crank case with ATF and run at idle for 10 minutes. Drain the ATF and run a couple of quarts of standard oil through. Replace the oil filter with another new one and refill the crankcase with the oil of your choice. When completed the oil on the dipstick should look like it just came out of the bottle.

I did this to a 1989 Toyota Corolla with 195K. The oil afterwards was just a little darker than the oil in the bottle. A vast improvement over the muck that had been in there.

While this is a little more expensive than a can of motor flush, it cleans better and won't damage the motor. The ATF is basically just a 15 weight oil with a lot of detergent, and other additives.

Just remember not to rev the engine with the ATF in it.
