Petrol Smell

Hi Guys,

I have a 1992 316i, and there is sometimes a slight smell of petrol in the interior. It seems like it's coming through the air vents. The smell seems to come and go, and is not limited to when the car is hot or cold.

There are no petrol leaks, and the hoses to the carb. are not damaged.
Has anyone ever come across this issue before.

Thanks,

Eoin

Not only do i have this problem (93' 325is) but also does my girlfriend (92' 325is). I think it's probably an old dirty fuel filter, but i haven't looked yet. Also no carb, it's fuel injected, that's what the "i" is 316i stands for.

Apologies - Injector is what i meant to say - but you get the drift, where the carb would be on regular engine.

Had a mechanic take a look at it last Friday and it appears that the hose leading into the injector is a bit worn. The underside of the hose has a shiny coat on it where the engine heat is vapourising the tiny amounts of fuel that are leaking through.

He is going to check the injector as well on Wednesday when he changes the hoses.

I had a new fuel pump fitted only 3 months ago by the main dealer, so the problem shouldn't be too serious. But trust my dealer not to check the hoses!

One of many on a long list of complaints I have with them!

my car smells like gas sometimes in the car, but mostly after i park the car and get out. it throws a low emissions code and my mechanic said it could be a connector to this pressure tank thing. i asked him if it will effect my gas mileage or the car's performance and he said no. its just a emissions problem that can be fixed. right now i dont have the money to do my brake pads and $200 for the pressure leak that apparently doesnt do anything but make the car smell like gas and throw the check engine light. im monitoring my gas mileage like a hawk though, normally ill get a little over 300 miles to the tank, but this last time it was 270. i can say that i did more 'hotrodding' on that tank though. so we'll see.

i also get petrol smell coming from the vents when i turn on the fan. when i went to check the engine bay, i can see petrol (i swiped it with my finger to smell to confrim) leaking from the bottom right hand side of the engine (looking from front of the car). is this something serious? also when i drive the car, the leaking stops. the leaking also appears to only when i start the car. once i drive off, it stops? any idea what it could be, and how serious is it?
any help would be greatly appreciated.
