Putting the car in park

When I stop and put my car in park and then release the brake my car seems to jump what feels like a good 2 to 3 inches. This seems rather excessive to me. Has anyone else experienced this and if it isn't normal what might be the cause of this?

Thanks!

hey there,

i experienced the same thing. i don´t know if it was 2-3 inches, but the car rolled a bit forward everytime until the park brake engaged. i believe that´s fine.

I would advice to engage the parking brake before releasing your brake pedal, it would also save some stress on your transmission and it'll be smoother to get it out of Park whenever you wish to hit the road again !

Yeah, use the e-brake to avoid stress on the tranny. Engage the e-brake before shifting into park, and always shift to D or R before disengaging the e-brake... (It was one of my Dad's pet peaves)

Mine goes either forward or backwards a couple inches...I notice that coz' I have a marker in my garage for precision parking as my car just fits so the door will close. I wouldn't say it "jumps"...it kinda just rolls a little.

My car does roll a bit after I put it in park and release the brakes. I assume it is normal because all my former vehicles did this same thing. Now, if your car jumps, meaning it jolts, have it checked out. A little roll is ok. Like people said before, engage the hand brake before you release the pedal brakes. See if that helps.

Yeah, Park is just a transmission lock. So you put it in Park with the brake pedal pressed and then when you let off the brake, the car has to roll a very small amount before the "lock" kicks in. Naturally, if the car is on a downhill, it will roll forward and lock. If the car is on an uphill, it will roll backwards and lock. It does not put any unnecessary stress on the tranny at all, though.
