Rear End Blown?

Well when i turn the car hard there is a clicking coming from the back. And the tires dont seem to rotate right. I think one of the spyder gears is either goin or gone. Could this be the case? And if so where can i find a new / used rear end for a 92 318i. What type of rear end do they have, LSD or Posi? And does this really sound like something a blown spder gear woudl do. I thought the rear end woudl just lock up if that happened. Please help me get this figured out.

First off LSD and Posi are basically the same thing. I am not sure if 92s have a guibo, but if they do I would check that, as well as the driveshaft bearing. Make sure your driveline is in good shape before assuming the worst about your rear end.

I just took it for another ride and it is 100% the rear-end. I know for sure just from how it is acting while taking turns and the sounds it's making. I deff need a new rear end. It had 95k on it. I cant afford to spend 1799 on a race rear end from BMP so what other options do i have?

No it's the rear-end i'm sure of it. I blew one up on my 7 i know what it's like. I found one in a junk yard for 450+ shipping. They dont know if it is locking or not, did all rear-ends in 92's have LSDs?

Never saw CV joints on the rear of a car, unless it has rear wheel steering....!

Universal joints will make a clicking or squeaking noise when they fail. Check the easy stuff first. I've only ever experienced one bad LSD rear years ago on a GM. On low speed turns (like a U Turn) it would actually make the whole car "shudder" once per revolution.

To troubleshoot the rear vs. the drive shaft/U Joint, get someone to creep it forward while you listen at the back of the car. Does it make the noise once per full rear wheel revolution? If so the rear is the suspect. Otherwise, does it make the noise once per drive shaft revolution? If so then it is probably the rear U Joint.

cv joint as in differential to wheel axle. to allow for your suspension (wheel) to go up and down while still connected to the same point on the differential, you need to have a continuous velocity joint right?

rear wheel drive vehicles with independent suspensions have cv joints in the rear.

so if you looked at your car, it has them.

I dont know about your car, but Mine is RWD, so the CV joints are in the rear [:p]

By the way kirby, a CV joint looks like this,

and there are 4 per car, 2 per axle.

The U joint is what is in the middle of the drive shaft,

I used to think U joints were the same thing as CV joint, but they are quite different. The U joint is stronger but can not bend as well as a CV joint and still transfer power.

Well it seems that both the CV joint and the rear end ( diff ) is blown. One went and it looks like it took out the other. There is oil leaking from the rear end where the CV joint went. So it looks as if i will have to replace 2 now. So i'm still looking for a rear-end.

Thanks, but I do know what CV joints are. I was having a "brain fart" when I posted about not having CVs on the rear. I do know better - my 87 Fiero had CV joints, never worked on them though.

U Joints - I've replaced them several times, most recently on my '95 Suburban when the truck was 4 YEARS OLD. Friggin' GM crap........
