im getting a grinding noise from the rear [possibly the left side] when accelerating hard but only at 3ooo revs it sounds like the rim is running on the road [its not] it lasts for about 2000 revs then clears and is fine i was wondering has anybody experenced this problem the car is running on 18s but i think the problem was there when i had my 16s on [not positive though short term memery loss and all that]

the beemer went into the garage to day we think its not actually the rear wheel but the rubber donut in the propshaft is breaking up new one will be fitted next saturday if its not that its the gearbox so much for my hearing thinking it was the rear wheel that was fine

i'll bet the 18s fill it up much better than the 16. one doens't think much everyday sensibility when opting for 18s and 19s. i think having the 18s makes your car look much nicer. i went down to 17s for the snow shoes, and it took some getting used to.

yes mate its the diameter of the rim in inchs the bigger you go increases top speed but reduces acceleration and gives harsh handling, smaller better acceleration and better handling reduced top speed but bigger look better hope that helps abit

Well, some of that is true. Even when you plus size your wheels, typically you try to stay as close to the same aspect ratio as the stockers. That is why you go for lower profile tires when you upsize the wheels. Of course, there are many differences and they will affect the ride quality as jonnyk described.

the problem has been cured it was the rubber donut inbetween the gearbox and the prop it had broken up causing it to become unbalanced and vibrating worse case it would of snapped and the prop would of tryed to spin through the transmission tunnel so i was lucky at least it is done and i dont have to worry anymore

Good you got it fixed. I would've reccomended getting that part (guibo) checked out - or the center bearing. But yea - good thing you got it fixed. If the driveshaft or the tranny output flange had gotten messed up... that would have been HUGE $$$$$.
