I just had the plugs replaced in my '92 325i. It was running ok, I just thought it was time to do it. I had platinum plus 4's installed. The next day,(after about 15/20 miles of city driving), it began to skip/miss a little when stopped at a light...hmmmm..(its an automatic). Now the mechanic is talking about a 'weak" coil.
That was the only thing that was touched. Fuel supply isn't an issue. A question!! Start screwing around with coils, or just trash the plus 4's, and go back to a set of Bosch plugs, and dismiss the plus 4's as a bad idea. Does anyone have any similar experiences?..I really would appreciate some other thoughts...Thanks Guys/girls.....

it could be a number of things . . . I would try the plugs since it started after you changed them.

Also, Check and clean your ICV

I had the problem of it stalling . . . mine is a 92 325i aswell . . . turned out to be the throttle position sensor.

Good Luck

I have heard of other stories about +4's when they were not the original equipment. They were in my 91 318is and I had no problems when I replaced them. I agree that I would put standard stock Bosch plugs back in and try that first.

I agree with Big Daddy. There have been both good and bad reports about platinums in the BMW sixes, including solvng the problem by going back to coppers.

Also, the E36 and E46 is known to misfire if the plug insulation boots are old/dirty/dry rotted and you have a valve cover oil leak. Oil runs down onto the plug, saturates the boot and creates a nice short circuit path. It's possible that replacing the plugs could have introduced an arcing problem similar to this if the boots are bad.

Your mechanic thinks the problem may be "weak" coil.
To rule that out, you can test the coils. Each coil should have
resistance approx. 0.4 to 0.8

good luck,

Thanks pcy..if the plugs don't fix..that'll be plan "B"....I'm just terrified of getting on a carousel of "fixes", when the car was ok until I had the plugs changed out..I really get pissed when that happens, and to really enjoy the car, or any car for that matter, its gotta run as well as its capable of..again..thanks

how many miles on the plug wires? possible they were damaged do to age/frailty when the plugs were done? lots of similar testimonies about the platinum plugs though, that's why i went straight to the dealer and replaced with the same plug that ran flawlessly for almost 100k. funny thing though, i thought they were Bosch but they are NGK! BTW, i'm running Magnecore 8mm wires with no issues except that they took a little long to get. the boots had to come from Germany supposedly, and the 8mm's were a little plump for the holders...

Stopped after work last night, and picked up a set of champion coppers for the car. The "plan" was to replace the 4's with coppers, and see what happened to-day...He He He I almost think the damn car knew what was up....it hasn't so much as twitched since I left work yesterday....hmmmm....stay tuned...im sure theres more to come. I have to look through my receipts to see when the plugs/wires/or even coils had been changed out, and when.....oh well its Saturday...no problems..right?
