On my '96 328i, every now in then I put in the key to start the car, turn it, and the key just free-spins. Spin spin spin. No resistance at all, I can go around 360+ degrees. Then I either wiggle the key some, or take it in/out, then the car starts as expected. Any idea what causes this?

At first I thought it had something to do with the windshield wipers or George Bush's laptop's hard drive bearings. But after much internal debate and research, I have decided to reccomend that you have a bad ignition switch. Man I need a gatorade.

Over the weekend a buddy said he had the same thing happen on his 97...325....the mechanic said that they change about 1 a month at his shop so I"m guessig its a common probelm with the cars.....you might try writing to BMW North America and see if you can get them to cover the parts....

Why would bmw cover the part? For all BMW knows the dude has 5 pounds of keys on the keyring hanging from his ignition.
Why wouldn't they?

I have a 99-540 with the instrument panel pixel lights are all screwed up....I'm the second owner and I emailed them yesterday they got back to me in 2 hours...I am being directed to a local rep that is going to help in getting it fixed for the price of the labor about $90 cost on the part is $700....so again why not ask and see if there is a replacement program in place sounds to me its a common problem according the my buddy's mechanic

Hm probably because he has a 10 year old car, and is fixing a problem not covered by a recall or service bulletin like your problem was. After a certain number of years the manufacturer is not required to replace anything, unless it is a saftey item.
