Hi~

I have a 1998 328is. I live in Southern California. It's getting cooler here in the evenings and mornings, around 63 degrees (i know i know, nothing like the midwest or east coast!), anyway, my steering wheel makes a dull rubbing/squeaking noise when I turn it usually to the left, and it's only when it's colder like around 65 degrees or lower. Once the car is warmed up and runing for about 5 mins, there's no more squeaking. Anyone know what it is, and how I can fix it? Is it anything serious? If not, it's seriously annoying!!

Thanks!

there are 3 hoses that commonly go bad in the power steering unit. I just had my done. You may be leaking powering steering fluid. If that is what is going on you will want to get it fixed asap or you will ruin your rack and pin steering.

To replaces the rack and pin could be as much as $2000.

Hmm...I'll have to check that....someone on Pelicanparts.com had the following to say:

Sounds like it's a common problem...
Wow, that is an awesome write-up abcxyz. My german mechanic told me that my squeak was possible damage to the rack and pin steering due to lack of or improper fluid. Never did he mention anything like that. And it sounds so accurate.

Luckily my squeak is mild and doesn't appear to effect the steering at all. Currently I get rid of it by turning up the stereo. It steers good and all, but it would be nice to get rid of that periodic squeak. I'll have to try that lower bearing lub when I get a chance. [bmwdance]

yeah i had this problem a few weeks ago. the same noise, and when i braked really hard, the power steering pump was whining really bad. but once i shut of the engine, waited a minute and started it back up, it was fine. ended up just being low fluid for both problems...because both are gone now.
