Timing chain Tensioner noise

Im looking to purchase a 325i but it has a slight knocking/rubbing noise coming from the Timing chain.
I was wondering how common it is that the timing chains snap and/or the tensioners become loose.If I replace
the tensioner then Ill replace the chain as well...Im not one to enjoy bent valves.

WOW! I don't want to sound stupid (again) but how do you know/how can you tell it's from there?!
